TACKLING FREQUENT INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES
CRUCIAL INSTALLATION ADVISORY
Installing baby gates requires a specific level of skill; attempting this task without professional assistance may lead to safety hazards and unforeseen expenses.
By reading this article, you acknowledge that you have reviewed and accepted the terms laid out here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The following examples highlight various hurdles I have encountered during installations, which may resonate with your experiences and offer valuable insights.
SOLVING INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 1: UNEVEN SURFACES
RESOLVING THE ISSUE OF UNEVEN SURFACES

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the correct size for the gate and any required extensions. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- Once you have the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder fitted with a metal/aluminium disc to accurately cut the gate, following the measurements indicated in the reference images above.
- Remove the plastic component from the section you intend to cut off and place it into the cut part of the gate to ensure the tension knob fits properly.
- This process will be clearer once you have the gate in your possession.
ADDRESSING INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 2: MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL
OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGE OF INSTALLING ON A SKEW WALL

PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW:
-
- Make sure the gate/extensions are ready for installation.
- Utilise Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps, ensuring a level surface on the wall.
- Allow the Putty to cure thoroughly BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely mount the gate using pressure.
- Do not rely on the gate for safety until all procedures are completed and the gate has been tested for stability.
NAVIGATING INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 3: OUTDOOR INSTALLATION OF BABY GATES
MANAGING THE CHALLENGE OF OUTDOOR INSTALLATION
Installing baby gates outdoors can be a practical and economical solution, but it may also void the warranty of these gates.

I recommend that outdoor installations of baby gates be viewed as a temporary and cost-effective solution. This may risk voiding your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are primarily designed for indoor use and are unsuitable for outdoor installation due to potential exposure to harsh environmental conditions.
- This limitation is explicitly stated in the warranty documentation provided with the product.
- Failure to comply with warranty requirements will result in the loss of warranty coverage.
For a durable solution, consider engaging a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. While this option may incur higher costs, it is the most reliable approach.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
Disclaimer: None of these procedures guarantee complete rust protection; however, they aim to extend the lifespan of the gate in South African weather conditions.
Routine maintenance every 1-2 months can significantly mitigate the risk of rust.
To reduce rust and moisture accumulation, adhere to the following guidelines:
-
- Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover all surface areas, particularly at the base.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This procedure allows water to drain, preventing rust from forming within the hollow structure of the gate, where moisture can gather at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will provide ventilation to avert moisture build-up.
- Apply a light coat of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow the first coat to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the product instructions.
- Review the product description on takealot.com; you may need to obtain mineral spirits to clean any overspray from non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will transform rust to a black colour, which should subsequently be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
